Artistic Director, Galina Barskaya, was ecstatic after tonight’s performance and is enjoying this run, as she grew up with the poetry of Pushkin and feels that the music of Tchaikovsky is an international language, understandable by everyone. She says, “The story was originally written from the 19th Century Russian point of view but is a timeless one about falling in love with the wrong person, hearts that are broken and tragic misunderstandings. It is heartbreaking, human and the music is superbly beautiful.”
Although, “You don’t have to speak Russian to enjoy the opera,” Ms. Barskaya says, “we have taken great care with the supertitles.” The translation from Russian to English was supervised by Ms. Barskaya’s husband, Misha Barsky and, though painstaking, is an integral part of the performance.
We will be speaking at length with Ms. Barskaya during the week, but wanted to let you know about this unique opportunity available to opera fans in the Los Angeles area.

The Independent Opera Company concludes it’s sixth season with a performance of Eugene Onegin written by Tchaikovsky.
This beautiful timeless Russian opera is based on a poem by Pushkin and tells the story of star-crossed lovers.
The performance is fully staged with piano accompaniment and is performed in Russian with English supertitles.
The final performances will be in the intimate setting of a beautiful Sanctuary at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 11555 National Boulevard, Los Angeles, CAC 90064.
